An operation by the Saint-Louis territorial gendarmerie brigade intercepted fifty individuals attempting to emigrate illegally off the coast of the village of Gouye Rène, in the municipality of Gandiole . This intervention followed intelligence indicating the presence of a suspicious vessel in the area.

Among those arrested are 44 Gambian nationals, including 2 women , 2 Malians , and 4 Senegalese . The pirogue, which had no engine, was seized by the authorities.

According to initial findings of the investigation, the group, originally composed of more than 200 migrants , set sail from the Republic of The Gambia. To evade the surveillance system put in place by the Defense and Security Forces, they attempted a long detour by sea.

After four days adrift , their boat washed ashore on Gandiole beach. The occupants were rescued by local fishermen before being handed over to the authorities.
