A new voluntary return operation has enabled more than 200 Guinean migrants, stranded in Mauritania, to return home. This initiative, supported by the IOM and the Guinean authorities, is part of a reintegration program designed to offer a second chance to migrants in distress.

As part of the national plan to combat irregular migration, the Senegalese Defense and Security Forces apprehended fifty individuals attempting irregular migration in the commune of Gandiole, in the Saint-Louis region. Their pirogue, which had departed from The Gambia, drifted for several days before washing ashore on the Senegalese coast.

In the space of five days, the Senegalese navy conducted three rescue operations, assisting 683 migrants who had departed from a neighboring country. Departures from Gambia and Guinea continue to rise, despite increased controls along the coast.

On September 22, the Senegalese navy assisted 259 migrants in distress about 100 kilometers from Dakar. These departures for the Spanish Canary Islands, increasingly frequent from Gambia and Guinea, reflect a shift in migration routes due to reinforced controls on the Senegalese, Mauritanian, and Moroccan coasts.

More than 18,000 migrants have been intercepted in the Mediterranean and returned to Libya since the beginning of the year. More than 850 were returned a week ago.
