The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have signed a new memorandum of understanding to strengthen their cooperation on migration governance, diaspora engagement, and sustainable development in response to internal displacement in Africa.
Signed by Mohamed Abdiker, Chief of Staff at the IOM, and Nnenna Nwabufo, Vice-President of the AfDB, this agreement places human mobility at the center of the continent’s development policies.
“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to placing migration at the heart of Africa’s development,” said Mohamed Abdiker.
For her part, the AfDB Vice-President emphasized that this cooperation will help make migration a driver of inclusion, employment, and equality within the framework of the AfCFTA.
The agreement is structured around three priorities:
Inclusive and peaceful migration governance;
Increased mobilization of the diaspora for development;
Sustainable responses to internal displacement.
Since 2018, more than 105 million dollars have been invested in joint projects. This new agreement aims to increase the positive impact of migration—particularly for women and youth—and to strengthen the resilience of African communities.
