According to security sources, the Senegalese navy rescued more than 280 would-be illegal immigrants off the coast of Dakar on Saturday.
Local media reported, citing the same sources, that a locally made boat, which had departed from a neighboring country, was intercepted, its passengers arrested and handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.
In recent weeks, attempts to cross clandestinely have increased along the west coast of Africa, exposing hundreds of people to grave dangers.
Earlier this week, more than 250 migrants in distress were rescued off the coast of Dakar, before being transferred to a naval base and handed over to the appropriate authorities.
Senegal remains one of the main departure points for illegal crossings of the Atlantic Ocean, carried out on board makeshift boats, in the hope for migrants to reach Europe.
